A CoC confirms that an electrical installation was inspected and tested and meets legal standards. You’ll need an initial CoC for any new installation and a supplementary CoC whenever you make additions or alterations (e.g., new circuits, solar/backup integration). For property sales, a valid CoC is required for transfer.

For the installation itself, a CoC remains valid for its lifetime—until the installation is altered (then a supplementary CoC is needed). For change of ownership (property transfer), the CoC must be no older than two years.

Only a registered person (registered with the Department of Employment and Labour) may issue a CoC, and it must be accompanied by the required test report after proper inspection and testing under their control.

Yes. Alternative supplies must be installed to prevent back-feed (no unsafe paralleling with the grid unless approved), with correct changeover/ATS, earthing and labelling—tested before handover. SA standards reference SANS 10142-1 (alt supplies) and SANS 10142-1-2 (embedded generation like PV).

Yes. The law treats any addition or alteration as work that requires a supplementary CoC, and solar/backup installations fall under that. You must already have (or obtain) a valid initial CoC for the property before a supplement can be issued.
